Notes from BOKA. There was a certain species of internal medicine attending that wore bow ties, may have carried pipes, and spoke slowly…like the diagnosis might reveal itself if given enough respect. Their offices had real bookcases, not for show, but for thinking. I say this as an intensivist who still loves the art of pausing, wandering, and asking “yes, but why?”
I always say that nowadays if you want to find the physicians/APPs in the hospital don’t look for clinicians in white coats (or the bow ties and pipes, for that matter)…look for those rounding in high end gym clothes.
Read this to a room full of my classmates (wielding Patagonia and Figs) as we waited for our attending. They loved it.
